XB1134 - chests2

I learned a valuable lesson this week, to double, even triple save all of my work, I lost the files for the chests shown in the below images and so had to start again, I still made the deadline and in my own opinion the extra practice allowed me to come out with something much closer to satisfactory, the final chests are shown below.

these chests are based on the World Of Warcraft MMO by Blizzard, the chests are based on the two factions, the Alliance, and the Horde.

1.
the first chest is based on the Alliance and I tried to stick to the alliances general colour scheme and feel, the orangey browns and light metals along with the blue and gold found in the logo are commonplace around any alliance city or town. in comparison to the old chest I exaggerated shapes and colours much more in the new one. this was to keep more with the style of WOW.

2.
the second chest is based on the Horde, as with the one above I tried to stick to the colour scheme of the horde, the murky green and dark blue-ish metals, but most importantly the tattered banner on the front is very symbolic of the horde, it can be found in any place occupied by horde forces and I wanted to try to convey it in this piece, it also allowed me to practice with using transparency in texture with 3DS-Max

XB1134 - Chests

I finished the 3D models for class and realised I have yet to make a post about that class, so I thought I would upload them. all textures were painted by me in Photoshop.

no1. this is a chest with the symbol for Abstergo from assassins creed, I gave it a battered look with scuffs whereby the metal shows through the paint, as well as some bullet-holes, this was more to make the texturing more difficult than to improve on the overall look of the chest as I wanted to improve my skills.

no2. the second chest is a basic pirate chest, i greatly enjoyed working on this one as I greatly enjoyed painting the metal and wood textures, the background shown on the sheet is also made by me using vue9, I needed something to fit the theme of pirates and thought a small island at sea would do nicely.

Choice Of Movement_DD1000

The movement I will choose as the subject for my essay will be Modernism. I feel that modernism will be a good choice because When researching the three posts for a previous task I found when researching modernism that it interests me greatly, this is probably due to the fact that I find the industrial revolution highly interesting. and the modernist movements connection to this time period interests me greatly.

More work from before - abstract

as I said in my previous post I will be uploading some more of my old work, this is one of my favourite pieces from while I was experimenting with abstract 3D, its called Distortion.

in this work I really like how the glass tubes turned out, even though there isn't much change between the colour inside the tubes and the colour outside on a whole, but there is still a distinctive black line marking out the edge of the tubes, I also like the swirl created from the shadows of the tubes.

as in the previous post this and more of my work can be found on my deviant art gallery.

Work from before the course

So I was cleaning up my desktop when I stumbled onto a folder of work I did at the beginning of the summer, most of it wasn't very good but I thought this deserved a place here, I made this using blender.

(I may upload some of the others from the folder if I decide they are good enough)

this and quite a bit more of my old blender work can be found on my deviant art page

DD1000_Modernism

Modernism

Origins

Modernism originated from the western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was heavily influenced by the rapid growth of cities and the urban lifestyle, also shaped by the terrors of the first world war modernism is a key design movement of the era and is also known as avant-garde.

Important people

A couple of the more well known names of modernism are Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, Picasso did a variety of work in the modernist style but my personal favorite is 'The Dream' (shown below).

As you can see this follows the basic modernist style rejecting all aspects of realism from the image and focusing more on what colours and shapes compliment each other more in the context of the image.

another well known artist of the movement is Henri Matisse a good example of modernism by Matisse is the portrait of Lydia Delectorskaya (shown below).

As you can see here this work by Matisse also follows the general guidelines of the modernist movement, rejecting all aspects of realism from the image as Picasso does, but in this image Matisse focuses more on subverting our expectation of colour rather than shape to achieve the overall effect.

DD1000_Cubism

Cubism

Origins

Cubism was pioneered in the early 20th century by Picasso with his early works such as the portrait of Colonel Daniel Henry Kahnweiler. (shown below)

as you can see the style of cubism mostly consists of breaking up the way the image would usually be drawn and piece it together in a randomized fashion.

Important people

The most notable artists of the cubism movement were, among others, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Juan Gris. Georges Braque was along with Picasso one of the creators of Cubism, Juan Gris joined the movement later and did some very distinctive cubism work such as 'the guitar' painted in 1918 (shown below).
as you can see here the work of Gris has the same distinctive broken up style as the work by Picasso this style is the marker of the cubism style.

DD1000_Vorticism

Vorticism

origins

Vorticism was an off-shoot of Cubism and begun in 1912 at the Rebel art centre in London, it began with a man called Wyndham Lewis but the name Vorticism was not associated with the movement until 1913, when an american artist called Ezra Pound began to paint in this style and gave it its name.

important people

The main name in Vorticism was Wyndham Lewis, an English painter and author who was born on the 18th of November 1882 and died on the 7th of march 1957, one of his Vorticism styled pieces 'Workshop' is shown below.

As you can see the work has the main characteristics of Vorticism, bold lines, harsh colours and angles that draw the viewers eye to the centre of the page.

Another important artist of the Vorticism movement was Lawrence Atkinson, a Mancunian artist poet and musician who was born on the 17th of January 1873, and died on the 21st of September 1931, one of his futurism artworks 'the lake' is shown below.

As you can see this piece shares the Characteristics of Vorticism with the piece by Lewis, the bold lines and harsh colours drawing the viewers eye to the centre of the page
