Modernism
Origins
Modernism originated from the western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was heavily influenced by the rapid growth of cities and the urban lifestyle, also shaped by the terrors of the first world war modernism is a key design movement of the era and is also known as avant-garde.
Important people
A couple of the more well known names of modernism are Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, Picasso did a variety of work in the modernist style but my personal favorite is 'The Dream' (shown below).
As you can see this follows the basic modernist style rejecting all aspects of realism from the image and focusing more on what colours and shapes compliment each other more in the context of the image.
another well known artist of the movement is Henri Matisse a good example of modernism by Matisse is the portrait of Lydia Delectorskaya (shown below).

As you can see here this work by Matisse also follows the general guidelines of the modernist movement, rejecting all aspects of realism from the image as Picasso does, but in this image Matisse focuses more on subverting our expectation of colour rather than shape to achieve the overall effect.
